fltndock.gifExpanded Polystyrene has excellent qualities for flotation products. It is  lightweight, durable, and very bouyant. EPS does not absorb water, so it can remain in liquid indefinitely without losing any of its bouyancy. Even when damaged, EPS has a water absorption of less than 2%.

As a lightweight material, EPS is ideal for the construction of diving rafts, boat houses, swimming docks, work barges, piers and other floating platforms. The structures are easier to build, effortless to put in and out of the water and are free of expensive maintenance and repair costs.

EPS for flotation applications is available in standard sizes and thicknesses and can also be custom ordered to meet specific requirements. One cubic foot will support 60 pounds, so a billet or block is capable of supporting thousands of pounds.

EPS is also ideal for flotation because it does not deteriorate by being exposed to water or weather as do building materials such as wood and metal. It is clean and odorless and will not rust, corrode or support fungus and bacterial growth. Because it is non-toxic and non-irritating, EPS is an ideal material for duck blinds, fish farm pens or pond agitators.

Encapsulated EPS
OPCO can provide EPS that is encapsulated with a rubberlike, impact-resistance covering that prevents corner breakage and repels animal and fowl encroachment. The coating will not crack and can sustain the ongoing cycle of freezing and thawing weather conditions. Encapsulated EPS resists damaging ultra-violet rays, which prolongs the elastomeric properties of the exterior covering. The black coating also improves the appearance of a marina structure because dirt, mud and other stains are much less noticeable.
